  • Professor Wu Yican, associate dean of Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology, gave a report about Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant Accident and Its Impact in the March 13.Recently, with the ever-increasing attention paid to Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant Accident, nuclear radiation safety crisis has caught people's eyes in the past few days. Due to lack of knowledge of nuclear energy and nuclear safety, a lot of the public couldn't identify variety of media information, even teachers and students in our university became confused. This report hoped to popularize the knowledge of nuclear safety to eliminate people panic caused by nuclear secret.

    In this report, professor Wu Yican analyzed the principles of nuclear power plants, the cause of the accident in Fukushima ,the effects of radiation on human health and the development trend of nuclear power with plenty of precise data and vivid pictures. In order to give the audience a overall understanding, Professor Wu Yican maked a comprehensive comparison to Fukushima, Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and Hiroshima events though a series of monitoring data. Finally, he claimed that Japan Fukushima nuclear power plant accident would not affect China's environment and public health.

    Professor Wu Yican also presented in simple language about the "Radiation and health" issues, and told the audience we need not to worry about Fukushima accident. Finally, Professor Wu explained the good development trend of world nuclear energy, and introduced a safer and cleaner of the fourth-generation nuclear power plant(Fukushima nuclear power plant is the second generation). At the same time, Fukushima accident also put forward higher requirements of China's nuclear power industry development forthe future, so Chinese nuclear industry will design safer nuclear energy systems to avoid the danger of them, such as accelerator driven sub-critical nuclear systems, nuclear fusion-drivensub-critical systems.

    Two-hour report was warmly welcomed by students and seemed so short for its wonderful. In the interactive session,many students asked lots of questions:"what is therelationship between Fukushima nuclear power plant accidents and nuclear weapons?", "Rapid development of nuclear energy's impacton international politics." and so on .
